Early start at Framingham’s Brophy School
The calendar marked the day as late summer, but local kids returned to schools across town for the first day of classes yesterday.
Outside Brophy Elementary School on Pleasant Street, fifth-grader Joseph Ratta said he was “nervous and excited” about the new year.
Things will be different at Brophy: the campus, along with the Cameron Middle School, is participating in a state program to add more classtime to the year.
For Ratta and his classmates, that means an eight-hour school day most of the week - coming in an hour earlier in the morning and staying another hour later in the afternoon. Ratta is looking forward to the year, but not its new schedule just yet.
“I’m just used to the hours” from last year, Ratta said.
Both schools won approval for Expanded Learning Time state grants earlier this year. Proponents say a longer day, with revised schedules, additional student activities and greater professional development time for staff, can help improve the quality of learning.
Kath Reilly, who coordinates Brophy’s ELT program, said it gives students more time with teachers on core subjects, and leaves room for more activities during the normal school day.
“Most people want this. They understand it’s more than just hours,” she said.
The school still must follow educational guidelines laid out by the state and federal governments, such as MCAS and No Child Left Behind. But the additional time grant covers the cost for organizations to come in and provide classroom instruction and professional development for teachers, she said.
At Brophy, Framingham’s Garden in the Woods has signed up for environmental lessons at the school, said Reilly.
And since activities can be included during the day, more students can participate because after-school transportation and other costs aren’t barriers to students, she said. Because of the longer day, most homework won’t be needed, other than some reading-related assignments, she said.
Brophy officials won’t start new activities until Sept. 5 to give students and staff more time to adjust to the new schedule, she said. On Thursdays, school ends at 1 p.m. to devote time for teacher conferences, she said.
“It’s unlimited potential … we’re given the freedom to create a program the way we want it,” said Reilly.
Marisa Book, 9, a fourth-grader at Brophy, said she is looking forward to the activities slated this year, including new student clubs. She loves reading and writing, and signed up for newspaper writing, Book said.
“It might be nice to have a shorter day, but then you get less homework and you do more fun activities,” she said
Jane Barksdale-McHugh, Brophy’s literacy specialist, said an important part of the longer days is the opportunity for teachers and other classroom aids to collaborate.
“The state has recognized that teachers need time … not only a longer day, and more in-depth, but time for teachers to sit down and talk about each child, and who should be doing what,” said Barksdale-McHugh.
Susan Mellusi said her son, Will, a fourth-grader, looks forward to a Brophy program that will work with music and technology.
“That is what all teachers wish for: More time,” she said.
While the district revamped its bus routes to save up to $250,000, ELT and other grants should cover transportation costs for the two participating schools. Three more Framingham schools are developing applications to join the program next year.

After more than a decade away from his hometown, Dave Lundstrom’s view of Galesburg is almost surreal now.“It feels like you’re seeing an old movie,” Lundstrom said. “I’m running into people I haven’t seen in 20 or 30 years.”Lundstrom, a star athlete at Galesburg High School who played basketball and golf at Bradley before becoming a professional golfer, was at Bunker Links Golf Course on Wednesday to teach a free golf clinic.For Lundstrom, it marked a return to the course where he learned the game and worked as an ambitious teenager.“I watered the greens at night, and in the morning I cleaned the place up, washing the windows,” Lundstrom said. “It’s so much more improved now. The fairways are gorgeous.”Lundstrom got the idea to do the clinic after talking with close friend and Bunker Links golf pro Greg Merrill. About 40 people were on hand for the clinic, which included Lundstrom showing off his favorite new gadget, a computer program that uses a sensor on your putter and a laser to determine a player’s putt alignment, length and pace.
